2015 Shanxi Wangda Xiang Report

In 2013 and 2014, RISE and Taiyuan University of Technology students constructed arsenic biosand filters in Wangda and Longjiaying villages, Wangda county, Shanxi province. In July 2015, a team returned to survey filter use. This report is the result of surveys and testing done during the July 2014 and 2015 trips.

Report on July 25th Shanxi Trip

We arrived in Pingyao, Shanxi, on the morning of July 25 and then met up with three students from Taiyuan University of Technology. After lunch, we took the bus to the Liangjiabao village and immediately started testing the water.We took samples and did arsenic and turbidity tests for all filters, plus iron, alkalinity and nitrate photometer tests for a selection of the filters.

Beijing Ribet Primary School Workshop

Primary school students from Beijing Shuren-Ribet Private School joined RISE at the School of Environment for a fun-filled workshop last December. This workshop was designed to teach the students about the importance of clean water and the process of water filtration in a child-friendly way.

29/4/15 Labour Day trip to Gansu a success

The three of us went to Gansu province to build a biosand water filter (BSF) at a rural primary school and to train university students in Lanzhou how to build BSFs.In Gansu, our partner project is “A Cup of Health”. Two members from the project were kind enough to take us around Lanzhou to visit tourist spots and eat street food. Three students from this project (from Northwest Normal University 西北师范大学) also joined us on our trip to Chenyuan (陈塬) Primary School.

On the 28-29 March, a couple of our RISE members went again to 山西 (ShanXi) to continue with the water filter development project near Pingyao. A group of students from 太原理工大学(TaiYuan University of Technology, TLD) provided their help and support throughout the weekend.

On the 12-15 March, a group of RISE students went to 山西 (ShanXi) province to further our project of developing and disseminating low cost, effective methods of water filtration.

21/12/14 : RISE wins Tsinghua University Student Social Practice Gold Prize

RISE recently won the Tsinghua University Student Social Practice Gold Prize for volunteering in Ningxia. The prize was awarded to the Ningxia Biosand Filter Promotion Team at the 2014 Tsinghua Practice Annual Conference (T-PAC).

06/11/14 – 09/11/14 : RISE goes to Gansu to build BSFs with Wennuan Shuibei

(Rise team members at Lanzhou University, 图1 出发前在兰大本部的合影) With the support of the China Environmental Protection Foundation, we successfully built BSFs in Wankou Primary School near Huining and Gongjing Primary School near Yuzhong.
清源协会派去的3名成员分别前往2所学校指导当地志愿者搭建BSF。在中华环境保护基金会的大力支持下,由“温暖水杯”项目准备搭建BSF所需的塑料桶和水管、当地小学准备石头和沙子,我们在会宁县四房乡湾口小学、榆中县兴隆山北山贡井小学各为孩子们成功搭建了一个生物慢滤池(BSF)。

Shanxi Project in Summer 2014

Thanks to Long Xiaodong (龙晓东), a student from Tsinghua University, RISE members learnt about the issues regarding drinking water pollution in his village Longjiaying (龙家营) in Shanxi province (山西). In June and October 2013, we visited Longjiaying as well as other 13 surrounding villages in Wanda County.
